This image portrays the end of the Serrano Glacier. “Fjord’s Sapphire” is inspired by the intense color of this glacial ice.
The ice in a glacier has been slowly compacted under its own immense weight for hundreds or thousands of years. This incredible pressure squeezes out virtually all the air bubbles, creating extremely dense, pure ice crystals. Without the air bubbles to scatter the light, you can clearly see the inherent blue color of the water/ice.
So, the vibrant color in this piece is actually the result of light having to travel a long journey through ancient, compressed water!
