Puya

ON EXHIBIT AT PALAZZO MORA FROM APRIL 19TH TO NOVEMBER 24TH, DURING THE BIENNALE DE VENECIA 2024, ITALY.

Native to Andean Highlands of Central and Southern Chile, the Puya is a flowering plant known for its extraordinary colors when in bloom, such as teal, emerald green, hot pink, and purple. Not only is it known for its striking appearance but also for its adaptability to survive in the harsh conditions of the Andean highlands. The plant’s adaptation to store water in its leaves allows it to endure extended periods of drought, making it well suited for its arid habitat.
Despite its natural resilience, the Chilean Puya faces some conservation challenges. Its slow growth and lengthy blooming cycles make it susceptible to disturbances, such as habitat destruction due to human activities, climate change, and illegal collection for ornamental purposes. As efforts continue to safeguard this remarkable flower and its delicate ecosystem, the Chilean Puya will hopefully continue to grace the Andean highlands, captivating those who have the privilege to witness its spectacular flowering display.
